Sabbatical

Dear friends & family in life & faith!

I have been granted the gift of extended study leave during May, June, & July this year.

A sabbatical is a time of renewal, stepping away from my current ministry setting. Within the Church of England, it is possible to have an extended period of time off every ten years for the purpose of rest, renewal, and personal development. My last pre-sabbatical Sunday is the 30th of April, and my first Sunday back preaching and presiding will be the 6th of August.

Ideally, there’ll be some travel elements across these three months. I have planned some time in Israel: as well as stopping, seeing, and sharing in God’s wider work in Asia, and then more time in this corner of Kent.

I am grateful to the Rochester Diocese, our local leadership, the PCC, and my wider church family, for their support in my undertaking of this. A full cover plan for public worship during my absence is finalised, with many of our church family, neighbouring clergy, & curates sharing in this. Coordinating leadership for our four congregations is in place, details are crunched, rotas are anchored, and much else!

Some appreciated conversations in sabbatical consultancy further sparked my interest in the range and goodness that are possible. The gift of coming aside for a little while to enjoy big open spaces is a precious gift.

Whether away or in the garden of England here, it’s all a gift…

There is much that is lively and good at the moment, and stepping away will be its own wrench.

As I set off, I leave you in very good hands with willing leaders, a glad church family, & much encouragement in our parish life. Pray for me, as I will for you. I look forward to being reunited and sharing what God reveals in these weeks…

With my love, thankfulness, and prayers,

Johnny
